The NeveRest 40 is a gearmotor with an attached encoder. The output shaft geometry and the gearbox housing diameter is similar to what FTC teams are familiar with. The shaft is a 6 mm D and the gearbox housing is 37 mm diameter.
FIRST Legality:
Encoder:
There is an encoder mounted to the backside of this motor. It is a 7 pulse per revolution (ppr), hall effect encoder. Since the motor's gearbox has a 40:1 reduction, then the NeverRest 40 output shaft provides 280 ppr.
Encoder Cable Options:
NeveRest motors do not come with an encoder cable as we offer 3 cable options:

These are the motors we buy quite often because they are always breaking. The Shafts are always wobbly after a week or so of use in a robot which affects autonomous and driving for our robot. I wish they were stronger. Other than that, we never had any problem with the motor itself or the encoder. From the AndyMark Support Team: This sounds like a failure mode specific to how you're using the NeveRest gearmotor. Where possible, try to limit the side loading on a motor shaft by placing outputs like wheels on a separate shaft driven by gears, belts/pulleys, or sprockets/chains from the motor shaft. With any questions about out products or how to use them, feel free to call (765-868-4779, 9-5 Eastern Time) or email us (support@andymark.com) and we're happy to help.
I was very pleased with the quality and service. Items ordered were received expeditiously.

These seems to built very well and have performed well with mecanum wheels. We replaced Tetrix motors with these and the encoders work much better than the tetrix motors

As the title says. The motor is perfect for wheel drives in FTC and works pretty well as a servo motor for same. It takes quite a while to overheat the motor, so it has great staying power.

Great job of helping me and our team. Thank you.
good quality!
Been dealing with AndyMark for years through FIRST Robotics and have never had a bad experience. They always go the extra mile to help coaches/teams, and as the founders (and most employees) are also part of FIRST, they really understand how to best support their customers.
No regrets! Highly recommend for drive base.

The new motors gear box broke very shortly after install. Bought to replace one with a lot of hours replaced one was still working. new gear boxes seam not to be as good as old ones.
Our FTC team needed more motors. Andymark is the teams favorite brand, and they delivered on time for the competition :) Thank you!
It's nice to get more power than the standard DC motor. Also, why build your gearbox or encoder when you can get this pre-built one?
Good motor. Reliable.
I order and you ship promptly it is great.Have not used these motors yet but will be implementing them over the christmas break.
We purchased the NeveRest am-2964a motors to replace our TETRIX motors. After about 2 weeks of testing/driving, one of the pinion gears broke free from the motor axle. As we had purchase 2 extra motors, we chose to replace both of the motors on the robot to allow for even wear and tear. Within 10 minutes, one of the new motors suffered the same failure. As we were less than 48 hours to a scrimmage meet, we elected to use J.B. Weld to secure the pinion gears to the axles to move forward. Up to this point, we have had no other pinion gear failures, so it is possible we just had 2 random/fluke failures. Beyond that, these motors are great! The encoders are predictable in their behavior and are securely affixed to the motors. All-in-all, a good product.

Great motor almost indestructible
kind of an odd title for a 5 star review - ordered 7 motors and had trouble with a couple of them grinding and running hotter then the others. I called Andymark up and they sent out replacement ones fast. I better motor with much better service then the old Tetrix motors - Thanks AndyMark

This is a high quality motor. It worked well for me and I will be buying more of them for other projects.
Good for FTC intakes

this is a good gear ratio for the tank treads that my team is using as a drivetrain as well as the winch they are using to pull themselves up the mountain/pull up bar. these motors are much easier to use than the tetrix.
We purchased these motors to replace our original Tetrix motors and they work so much better than those we replaced.
Stout - be prepared to be impressed
These motors are very high quality and worth the value the ability to perform and not burn out is exceptional and critical to competative play.
We were expecting thee to be slightly larger than the regular ones, but these are almost double in size. Two motors have already broken on us, but I was thankful that they were promptly replaced. The service provided was very helpful.

Better than the other motors on the market.
Much more reliable than other FTC legal motors. Built in encoders and screw holes for face mounting. Great product.
We have had several orders with Andy Mark for our FTC and they have always been timely, accurate and easy to order or talk to on the phone. Thank you for helping our students learn and grow with First!

Ready to convert to these especially with 3 gear ratios coming.
"The NeveRest 40 Motor/Encoder comes with red/black power leads ready to add the Anderson Power Pole connectors to allow connection to the 2015 FTC power distribution box. AM offered $5 off last week and that allowed me to pick up the encoder cables for free! I purchased 6 pieces each."
"The specifications could have been more informative... The physical dimensions are nice, but include maximum current rating, current at max speed, torque at max speed, max torque, power consumption in Watts, power output in Watts, voltage rating (the actual voltage rating please, not 12V)."
"Pretty sure the connector is an XH series JST 4 pin in case anyone was wondering. Very nice motors."
"Hi, one of our am-2964 isnt working well, When we connect it to power (12v dc) someimes spins and sometimes doesnt we have to spin it by hand and it starts spinnig, like if something is stucked. Please send us feedback (AndyMark Response: Please contact us at sales@andymark.com and we can work with you on fixing your issues.)"

We used NeveRest motors in FTC's Cascade Effect game on both our drivetrain and lift. For the lift they were fantastic. We used them as servos, frequently making them hold position to hold the lift at a given height. Their ability to hold position in a stall condition for extended times was critical to our application. We used them for the same reason on the drivetrain. If we stalled during auto we were still going to have good motors for Teleop. The NeveRest motors could run all of Auto at stall and still be ready for teleop. The only thing to watch with them is the gearbox. The motor is so good that now the attached (built-in) gearbox is the weakest link in the chain. We have had gearboxes fail and not noticed it immediately. The other motors on our drivetrain would pick up the slack and the robot would drive OK but not great. It became critical to write some test programs to detect the gearbox failures in the drivetrain motors so that we could swap them out between matches.
Service is great, delivery is prompt. Pricing is good, products are high quality.
The motors all arrived in good condition this time. Our previous order saw two cracked motors and my students didn't deal with it right away so we couldn't do anything. THank you!
"we've burned out a lot of Tetrix motors and broken many transmissions too. This year we had 2 robots and put all Neverest on the heavier one. These have held up better, however, we have burned out one motor and blown two trannies during the season, so far. They are a definite upgrade, but have their limits too. Team 724 and 4535... RedNeK robotics :o))"

We had one of the four that didn't function properly. Otherwise, we'd have given it a five.
"I am updating my last comments with more info gained with more experience. We have broken a second gearbox. Likely our robot is near the maximum torque allowed on the gear box and impacts to the drive train are damaging the gears. What is really needed with these motors is a flexible coupler to soak up impacts and not transmit the shock to the gear box. We achieved about 2-3 hours out of each gearbox. When replacing one of the motors we had an encoder fail on the new installed motor. It was delivering 2x the pulses specified. Swapping it out fixed the issue. Still we like these a lot better than the Tetrix motors and the gearbox failures are likely an issue with our current design.... living on the edge just like a race car engine! Last comment... we installed Anderson Power Poles near the motors on the DC power wires so the motors can be swapped out quickly."
We had burned out a number of Textrix DC motors. We decided to replace them with NeveRest motors for our FTC qualifier. They worked great! Thanks. Team 3980.
My FTC team used 7 of these motors this season. We really like them. There was a bad gearbox on one and a flaky encoder on another. Andymark replaced them very quickly. Outstanding customer support!
Great quality for decent price. Quick and reliable service.
Finally, a well designed motor for small robots. Excellent torque, robust structure, and encoders that are reliable!
These motors are nice for FTC in applications where you might experience prolonged stall. The encoder is built into the tail of the motor, so the body of the motor is longer than Tetrix motor, but that gives more usable shaft because the USDigital encoder is not mounted on the shaft. Turns the opposite direction as a Tetrix motor and has different number of encoder ticks/rev, but that can be managed.
"Seemed really solid but they have some issues: Longer overall length due to encoder on back. Encoder plugs are not keyed and have issues inserting both into the Motor Controller box. They are really difficult to insert both... they are not to spec for the encoder box! Harder to change out in a hurry as you have to remove all the wiring from motor to the controller (important during competitions). Matrix has disconnects at the motor. Broke a tooth in the gearbox 2/3 through our second competition. Not burning up during a stall is great! Textrix has undersize power resistor that burns up in about 10 seconds during stall conditions."
"Do what they should with the built in encoder for FTC Tetrix Bot use. Please note to use more than one cable connector into the Tetrix FTC motor controller, one needs to remove the small internal micro plates for proper plug in fit, which also limits one to using only this connection design. But these are better than all the others both in quality and price."
Got it in shortest time in spite of the holiday timing.
I think that the NeveRest 40 Motor is great deal at $25 and $5 for the encoder cable, it is a great alternative.
"It's really nice to see alternatives to the Tetrix DC motors in FTC and I love the price, robustness, and built-in encoder on these. The ability to mount them in standard Tetrix motor mounts is of course quite nice. But we're using the bolt circle for a face-mount configuration in our drivetrain, and I can't help but ask this: Why on earth are the mounting holes M3? Every other Tetrix component uses #6-32 screws. Everything is made for them, and teams have them in plenty. Teams who want to take advantage of the awesome face-mounting capability now need to not only buy and keep track of another size of screw (That is very similar to #6-32 and could easily cause mix-ups), they also need to buy and keep track of a 2.5mm allen key (Again, easy to mix up with a 7/64 allen key) to install them. Again, the motors are great, but I'd love to see future versions with #6-32 mounting holes."
These seem much better than the Tetrix DC motors and include the Hall Effect sensor.
We received the motors promptly and have been evaluating it for our FTC needs.
"Just got first shipment of motors. I love the fact that the power cable is soldered to the leads and we won't have to worry about the plugs coming off the back of the motor like on the Tetrix. The gearbox looks super solid and the 2 minute plus life at axle stall under power should be far superior to the Tetrix motor as well. The one complaint I have at this point is the encoder cable connection... granted they give us fair warning that cable is not included but from the pic I thought it might be compatible with the encoder cable for the pitsco encoder. IT IS NOT so buy the cables! The fact that it has integrated encoder at this price point FAR outweighs the negative! $30/35 for what should be a superior performing motor versus $110 for the Tetrix setup... How could I complain! I will update the review when we get them installed and start using them."
"The am-2964_MotorTestingReport.pdf and am-2964+NeveRest40.PDF files specify "DIMENSIONS ARE IN INCHES" and "Dual dimensions in inches". The latter is true, but the former is not. The (single) dimensions are in millimeters. I'm really looking forward to burning fewer motors this season! (AndyMark Response: Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have updated the documentation. 8/29/14)"
