CIM / NEO Pinion Installation:
The 16 tooth pinion gear for the CIM / NEO does not use a key for torque transfer. There are two possible methods of installation of this pinion on a CIM or NEO style motor.
- If the tolerances of both the motor shaft and the pinion are in your favor an arbor press (possibly up to 3 tons) is required to install this pinion due to the intended interference fit (0.001 - 0.002"). In the Sport gearbox these pinions are designed to press flush to the end of the shaft.
- If using an original NEO motor Please follow the NEO Press Fit Pinion Guide.
- If using a NEO 1.1 Motor insert a #10-32 x 3/8in long socket head screw into the hole in the back of the motor to support the internal shaft while pressing pinions.
- If the tolerances are not in your favor and the pinions slip on the shaft, or you feel that the press fit it too weak, an adhesive is required to transfer torque. The procedure is the same for all motors.
- Apply a few rings of red Loctite to the shaft, and the bore of the pinion, then slip the pinion onto the shaft so that it is flush with the tip of the shaft.
- Red Loctite has been tested to a factor of safety of 4x the stall torque of a CIM when let to cure for 24 hours.
- Apply a few rings of red Loctite to the shaft, and the bore of the pinion, then slip the pinion onto the shaft so that it is flush with the tip of the shaft.
If you are are unable or uncomfortable performing these procedures, we recommend purchasing a motor with the pinion pre-installed. They are available as am-0255_16T for the CIM and am-4258a_16T for the NEO.
