Product Overview
The NI roboRIO is the next generation in student robotics controllers. For the most up to date information, and technical specifics, please visit the NI roboRIO webpage. For more roboRIO support for FIRST Robotics Competition teams, visit ni.com/frc
This device is designed specifically with FIRST in mind. It's more powerful, lighter, and smaller than the previous generation. This controller will give FRC teams never before seen computing power. Here you can find instructions on how to set up your FRC control system with the roboRIO as the central controlling unit.
If you need any assistance with your roboRIO, please contact NI through the FIRST Support Forums here: https://forums.ni.com/t5/Support/ct-p/Support?profile.language=en
F.A.Q.
- Will my FRC Team receive the roboRio?
- Rookie teams receive a roboRIO in their Kit of Parts. Veteran teams do not receive one in the Kit, but you can purchase one through AndyMark.
- Will roboRIO support other programming languages?
- Yes, it will support LabVIEW, Java, and C++.
- How is roboRIO different from myRIO?
- Both devices use the Xilinx Zynq chipset (processor + FPGA) and use a lot of the same architecture. roboRIO has connectors and I/O specific for use in FIRST (e.g. CAN and PWM connectors), while the myRIO uses generic screw terminals for all I/O. The software experience will also differ between the devices initial since the roboRIO will require the FRC Suite. The roboRIO is also designed to be more rugged so that it can survive multiple FRC seasons through features such as conformal coating and extra short protection.
- Can non FRC Teams purchase a roboRIO?
- FRC teams, affiliates, partners, and organizers can purchase roboRIO from AndyMark provided they will be used to support FRC teams or competitions.
- Contact NI with inquiries for non-FRC uses
- Can I get more information on the roboRIO?
- You can check it out on the NI website.
- We lost our power connector, where can I get more?
- The Sauro Connector CTF020V8 (am-2076) is the same one included with the roboRIO, just in a different color.

roboRIO USB Port
Had the bad luck to receive one of the roboRIO's that grab onto the USB cable and won't release it once you finish programming the flash. After a quick search of the web it looks like this has been a problem since 2015. It would have been nice if NI could have corrected this problem sometime in the last five years. Hopefully NI's suggestion of shoving plastic pieces inside the connector will work and release the cable. The roboRIO was also not packed very well. It was inside a thin bubble wrap bag that was inside a box that had nothing to keep the roboRIO from just sliding around. That box was then placed in a larger shipping box that had the rest of our order (including heavier metal pieces). Fortunately it seems to be working even with the USB cable hanging from the port.

"The right part for the job"
"Our team is putting together a dedicated software test bed this summer; to be in sync with the competition machine we went with the same controller that is used for competition. Looking forward to seeing what the kids can do in the realm vision processing in the coming years."

Replacement
This order was amazing. I could not believe how fast it arrived. Unfortunately this was ordered because another part from you quit during this first day of competition. We got a loaner part with the intention of getting our original part fixed. My coach and student programmer called separately and did not get a return phone call. We would still like to get the original fixed.

NI roboRIO
Excellent customer service!!!! They were very professional and knowledgeable!!!
-
Exactly as advertised
We bought this to use as a control board off of our robot for testing purposes. It worked just like it should have, and has helped us test some different things without having to un-bag our bot!

Packaging
You guys packaged a $2000 piece of hardware(retail, $435 on AndyMark obviously) with a thin piece of ESD safe bubble wrap, a small box, and then tossed it in a box with other hardware with some paper packing to go with it. Not everyday you see that much carelessness, I was disappointed. While the device was fine, coming from FedEX with that shoddy packaging could have been a real problem with the way FedEX handles its packages.

Looks Good
From what I have seen, it looks like a good product. From dealing with NI, asking probably to many questions, and from handling it up close, I Believe it will be a good controller. Time will tell. And to whomever did the metal shavings review...learn to cover your electronics.

"Looks expensive to replace."
"I like this in concept, but I don't think it makes sense in practice. Integrating the sidecar and microcontroller looks to make this expensive to replace. The C-RIO is a robust piece of equipment that rarely fails. The digital sidecars are very susceptible to metal debris and electronic board issues. We had to replace 3 sidecars this season because of failures (which was expensive). 2 were from metal debris and 1 was from a random short. Having to replace 3 microcontrollers because of the new integrations, instead of just a sidecar is an expensive proposition. If we had to replace this new microcontroller 3 times we probably wouldn't have been able to compete because of budgetary constraints. This controller should have separated out the sidecar functionality to a new sidecar or utilize the old sidecar and reduce the contoller's footprint. (AndyMark Resonse: We have sent your concerns to National Instruments.)"
-
"Dimensions"
"What are the dimensions on this thing? It looks great but how long can we expect USFirst to use it? If First would set a definite number of years it will used it would help your sales. I don't want to buy an extra and then see it sit in the closet after a year."
-
"Balancing out the previous review"
"Contrary to the previous reviewer's assertions, the part's information pages list it as being overcurrent protected, and thus capable of and designed to withstand many metal shavings entering the holes."
-
"reset buttons?"
"The reset button appears to not be recessed. Might take special design to prevent resetting the roboRIO in the middle of a match. (AndyMark Response: These buttons are physically designed to require a deliberate action by a user. While pressing the button could be accidental, it should be no easier than having the 120 Amp Breaker button being pressed.)"
-
"Too many Holes"
"So we all know that electronics and metal shavings do not mix. The cRio had several connectors which when filled with foreign material would cause catastrophic failure. This new device seems to have even more locations which will be susceptible to this. (AndyMark response: The customer is correct in that metal shavings and electronics don't mix. However, we hope that folks wait until this product is actually in the hands of users and tested before making critical judgements.)"
