Write a ReviewProduct Overview
The Sport Gearbox is a competition tested high-performance line of planetary gearboxes from AndyMark and BaneBots that iterates on years of previous planetary gearboxes used in FIRST Robotics Competition. It has been optimized for strength and volume with durable steel gears and a single piece aluminum housing, ensuring that there is no possibility for misalignment of the stages.
The two and three stage versions of these gearboxes also feature an "HD" output stage, with stronger gears and carrier plates ensuring that it will handle heavy or cantilevered loads without worry.
The configuration options allow you to select every available gear ratio with every available motor input, meaning there are some combinations that could theoretically exceed the gearboxes design characteristics. Please reference the below table for guidance. Rest assured that AndyMark still stands behind our products 100% and if you feel that there is a problem with your gearbox or any of our products please contact us and we will make it right.
A packet of red tacky grease (am-2768) is included with every complete gearbox purchased. Grease must be used to coat every internal surface of the gearbox before use.
All ratios of Sport Gearboxes use a 4:1 input stage, with the same tooth count pinion, so motors and gearboxes can be switched out with ease.
Input Hardware:
The Sport Gearbox is available with a variety of different mounting hardware options.
- CIM or NEO mounting hardware includes the screws, pinion and plates for mounting any CIM style motor. It includes a long block so that you can use these motors without modifying the output shaft. It also includes a short block, that allows you to use the motor after cutting 0.87 in. off the output shaft. For detailed instructions about this please see the Motor Installation Guide below.
- 550 or 775 mounting hardware includes the screws, pinion and plates for mounting any 550 or 775 style motors such as the AndyMark RedLine, the VexPro 775pro, the BaneBots RS775, the NEO 550, and the AndyMark NeveRest.
- Dual 775 mounting hardware uses the Dual 775 Gearbox to accept up to two 775 style motors such as the AndyMark RedLine, the VexPro 775pro, or the BaneBots RS775. This combining input gearbox also adds an additional 3.25:1 reduction to the planetary stage which is accounted for when you select your overall ratio above.
Pinion Installation:
All Sport gearboxes use the same tooth count pinion, so any input assembly can be swapped for any ratio
The Sport pinion gears do not use a key for torque transfer. There are two possible methods of installation of this pinion gear.
- If the tolerances of both the motor shaft and the pinion are in your favor an arbor press (possibly up to 3 tons) is required to install this pinion due to the intended interference fit (0.001 - 0.002")
- If using an original NEO motor Please follow the NEO Press Fit Pinion Guide.
- If using a NEO 1.1 Motor insert a #10-32 x 3/8in long socket head screw into the hole in the back of the motor to support the internal shaft while pressing pinions.
- For 550 and 775 motors the back they should be stood up vertically with the backshift directly supported and pressed as shown in this video.
- If the tolerances are not in your favor and the pinions slip on the shaft, or you feel that the press fit it too weak, an adhesive is required to transfer torque. The procedure is the same for all motors.
- Apply a few rings of red Loctite 271 to the shaft, and the bore of the pinion, then slip the pinion onto the shaft down the the desired location.
- Red Loctite 271 has been tested to a factor of safety of 4x the stall torque of a CIM when let to cure for 24 hours.
- Apply a few rings of red Loctite 271 to the shaft, and the bore of the pinion, then slip the pinion onto the shaft down the the desired location.
If you are are unable or uncomfortable performing these procedures, we recommend purchasing a motor with the pinion pre-installed.
They are available as:
- am-0255_16T for the CIM
- am-4258a_16T for the NEO
- am-3775a_16T for the 775 RedLine
- am-4259_16T for the NEO 550
